The Genres and Subgenres of Creative Writing

Creative writing branches out into many other categories. Fiction branches out into four sub-genres namely: novels, novelettes, short stories and novellas. Stories that have less than 1000 words are classified as micro-fiction. And then there is Poetry that also breaks down into several sub-genres: haiku, tanka, sonnet, ballad, and more. Lastly, there is Creative Nonfiction: memoirs, biographies, journals, essays etc.

Select which type of writing you’re most comfortable with and make it your forte. Of course, you don’t have to necessary limit yourself to one specialty if you possess the rare talent of delving into different genres.

How to Get Started

To get started on your creative writing project, you have to start writing regularly. You don’t necessarily have to set a schedule but it will help if you’re more conscious on how many times you’re doing it. Scribbling down notes on a frequent basis will help you come up with creative writing ideas.

Take in mind that you won’t always have bouts of inspiration hitting you on a daily basis which is why it is important to take notes of your ideas. Creative writing ideas may pop out of odd situations and random places so always keep your pen and notebook handy for them.

To be a great writer, you have to constantly strive for it. You must widen your vocabulary by constantly reading. You also have to constantly seek out your muse. Creative writing requires you to be very descriptive which means you have to be able to portray a vivid picture with every line you produce. Inspire yourself with everything going on around you. You can find inspiration for writing from people just walking by your house or maybe even the seemingly magical change of season. Let your story point out something most people don’t pay attention to. You have to introduce a new perspective of things to your reader.

Finally, the last thing you have to remember about creative writing is that it is an art form that is made up of deep and random thoughts so you have to let your imagination loose. This is one of the most enjoyable types of writing styles; simply have fun when you begin your writing venture.
